A Model of Vacancy Chains as a Mechanism for Resource Allocation
نویسنده
چکیده
Vacancy chains can be tracked in any context where a scarce resource flows through different owners, such as employment positions. However, under certain conditions vacancy chains, rather than market or other forms of competition, determine the allocation of the resource. This article develops a computational and formal model of vacancy chains as a mechanism for resource allocation in order to find out its properties with respect to organizational forms. It is found that hierarchies with less middle managers than a pure pyramid are particular prone to make use of vacancy chains in order to allocate resources — e.g. positions — among their members. In fact, vacancy chains often disappear when information is widely avaliable. This happens because information is likely to attract applicants to the resource, who may engage in competition and eventually agree to regulate it by means of a market. On the contrary, organizations that are thick at the bottom and at the top but thin in the middle are such that more information increases the likelihood that resource allocation is regulated by means of vacancy chains.

Performance-Based Resource Allocation in Higher Education: A Black Box Containing the Paradox of Increasing Efficiency and Decreasing Productivity
To cope with escalating financial resource limitations from both expanding demands for higher education and experiencing a relatively reduction in public support, higher education units have profoundly adopted a performance-based resource allocation mechanism in recent years. Nevertheless, empirical evaluation findings show that the presumed improvement in performance has not been fulfilled. Us...
متن کاملMulti-robot task-allocation through vacancy chains
This paper presents an algorithm for task allocation in groups of homogeneous robots. The algorithm is based on vacancy chains, a resource distribution strategy common in human and animal societies. We define a class of task-allocation problems for which the vacancy chain algorithm is suitable and demonstrate how Reinforcement Learning can be used to make vacancy chains emerge in a group of Beh...
متن کاملTask Allocation through Vacancy Chains: Action Selection in Multi-Robot Learning
We present an adaptive multi-robot task allocation algorithm based on vacancy chains, a resource distribution process common in animal and human societies. The algorithm uses individual reinforcement learning of task utilities and relies on the specializing abilities of the members of the group to promote dedicated optimal allocation patterns. We demonstrate through experiments in simulation, t...
متن کاملDistributed Multi-Robot Task Allocation through Vacancy Chains
Existing multi-robot task allocation algorithms (MRTA) generally do not consider the effects of interaction, such as interference, but instead assume that tasks are independent. That assumption, however, is often violated in groups of cooperative mobile robots, where interaction effects can have a critical impact on performance. Modeling the effects of interaction, or group dynamics, is problem...
متن کاملA Proposed Mechanism for the Iranian Model of Kidney Donation (A Comparison of the Iranian and Roth’s Models)
Optimal resource allocation by means of the price mechanism is one of the main duties of the economics. Optimum allocation is sometimes realized not through the price mechanism, but via assignment algorithms due to an insufficient number of agents on either side of the exchange. Facing the same problem, the kidney market may be considered as a type of market failure that calls for market design...
